The province of Southland covers about 11% of New Zealand's land area, yet has only 2% of New Zealand's population. New Zealand's largest National Park, Fiordland, covers most of the western part of the district. Stewart Island is at the south end of the district, and is a world reknown tourism destination. The principal town in Southland is Invercargill.
The Southern Institute of Technology is a noted tertiary institution, located in Invercargill and provides a wide range of courses to suit any student. There are also a wide range of activities available in Southland, many based around the stunning natural resources of the area.
Invercargill is an ideal base for rowers, with two competative clubs (Invercargill and Waihopai) rowing on the Oreti River, and regular competition with the other clubs based in the Southland (Bluff and Riverton) and Central Otago (Dunstan Arm) area.
